A Taste of Humble Pie

Few things excite my little boy more than balls. Baseball, basketball, football, golf, ping-pong...You name it, he loves it, and has since the day he was born. So when we announced that we were going bowling, he just about couldn't contain himself.

We rode the bus down to the student union bowling alley (remind me to never ride that bus again - I'm still feeling nauseous). One step into the bowling alley and Kyle was spellbound. Ping-pong tables, pool tables, bowling...you could say it was a little bit of heaven on earth for my boy. Almost as good as a baseball game, but we won't go that far. He grabbed his size-9's and his 6-pound-ball and marched down to our lane, knowing exactly what he was supposed to do.

And this is how the game went down:

  • Kyle walked up to the lane, threw that 6-pound-ball, and watched it roll down the lane at .08 mph. It took 5 minutes to get down the lane and he knocked 4 pins down.
  • Ruth gracefully rolled the ball down the lane and knocked 4 pins down.
  • Kyle decided that throwing wasn't working, so he sat the ball on the ground and gave it a push down the lane at 1.0 mph. 5 pins down.
  • Ruth went again, 5 pins down (Thank goodness for bumpers).
  • Kyle walked up, threw the ball, and when it wasn't going fast enough, he chased the ball down the lane and gave it a good, hard KICK! He only knocked four pins down, but we just about fell off our chairs, laughing so hard.
And so it went, Kyle and Ruth, neck and neck until Ruth finally pulled ahead in the end. And where was Kevin while all of this was going on? Throwing strikes and spares and leaving us in the dust. End score? Kevin: 157, Ruth: 59, Kyle: 47

Good job, Kev. Better luck beating a 3-year-old next time, Ruth.
